IP PROTECTION CLASS
Understanding the IP protection classes in lighting technology
IP protection class in a nutshell:
The IP protection class classifies the degree of protection of electrical equipment against foreign bodies and moisture in accordance with the standard Types of protection by enclosure, IP code.
It differs from the protection class and protection area, which describe other aspects such as safety measures and installation zones. The degree of protection consists of an IP prefix, which stands for International Protection or Ingress Protection, followed by two digits that indicate the specific degree of protection. The first digit refers to protection against foreign bodies, while the second digit describes moisture protection, with higher numbers indicating higher protection.

IP protection class: Protection against foreign bodies and moisture
The IP protection rating, also known as Ingress Protection or International Protection, is a standardization that evaluates the degree of protection of electrical equipment against the ingress of foreign bodies and moisture. This standard defines how well a luminaire or other electrical device is protected against exterior influences, such as dust, water or other harmful substances. Classification is based on the IP code, which is specified in detail in the standard "Degrees of protection by enclosure, IP code" . This standard provides clear guidelines and standards for manufacturers and users to ensure the safety and functionality of electrical equipment, especially in environments where it is exposed to potentially hazardous conditions.
Avoid confusion: Here we clarify the differences.
Type of protection

The degree of protection consists of two parts: IP for International Protection or Ingress Protection and two digits for the specific protection.
Area of protection

Installation zones in rooms with elevated humidity or direct contact with water, in which no electrical operating devices or cables with high voltages may be present.
Protection class

Identifies electrical equipment with regard to its protective and safety measures to prevent electric shocks.
The degree of protection consists of two parts
The degree of protection consists of two parts: IP for International Protection or Ingress Protectionand two digits for the specific protection. The first digit provides information about the protection against the ingress of foreign bodies such as dust or insects. The second digit describes the protection against moisture and water.

The protection class consists of two parts: the IP, which stands for International Protection or Ingress Protection, and two digits that indicate specific protection. The first digit refers to the protection against foreign bodies, while the second digit describes the protection against moisture.
IP protection types in the home

Different IP protection types can occur in a house: A covered terrace could have IP52 to be protected against dust and falling water, while a garage with IP42 is protected against solid foreign objects and dripping water. In a bedroom, IP20 is sufficient, as no particular protection against moisture is required, and a boiler room with IP22 offers protection against solid foreign bodies and dripping water falling at an angle.
The IP code number describes the protection of an enclosure against the ingress of foreign bodies and water, with higher numbers indicating better protection. It consists of two digits: the first ranges from 0 to 6 for foreign bodies and the second from 0 to 8 for moisture.

Protection type uncertainties: When professional advice is crucial
In some cases, however, it is not entirely clear which IP protection class is most suitable for an application. This is also because the protection rating does not indicate how resistant the luminaire is to UV light, chlorine cleaners in swimming pools, salt water or even ammonia vapors, such as in stables, if it is exposed to these for a longer period of time. If in doubt, it is therefore always advisable to seek expert advice. Everything you need to know about LED lighting. Subscribe to our YouTube channel and don't miss any of our LED knowledge videos.
IP protection classes: Which luminaires are suitable for which areas of application
From 4, the luminaire is protected against splashing water from all directions and if it has IP66, it can be cleaned of dirt with a strong jet of water. The product may be permanently submerged from an IP rating of 68. Where luminaires with which protection rating are required depends on the surrounding conditions. In a living room, for example, moisture is not to be expected. A protection rating of IP 20 is sufficient for this. The situation is different in outdoor areas, for example. Isolat recommends that luminaires with a protection rating of less than IP 52 should not be used in unprotected outdoor areas. A luminaire mounted on an outside wall can only be exposed to rain from a protection rating of IP54. Ensure that the cable feed and fixing holes are sealed accordingly.

Everything You Need to Know About IP Protection Ratings
The IP rating (Ingress Protection) classifies the level of protection of electrical equipment against foreign objects and moisture. It consists of two digits:
- First digit: Protection against solid objects (e.g., dust).
- Second digit: Protection against moisture (e.g., water).
For indoor use, IP20 (no protection against objects or moisture) to IP44 (protection against objects >1 mm and splashing water from all directions) are common. IP20 is suitable for dry rooms, while IP44 can also be used in bathrooms or kitchens.
For outdoor use, IP54 (protection against harmful dust and splashing water) to IP68 (protection against dust and continuous immersion) are recommended. For example, ISOLED LED AQUA RGB+WW+KW Flexband strips with IP68 are ideal for outdoor applications.
IP65 means:
- Dust-tight (protection against harmful amounts of dust).
- Protection against water jets from any angle.
Choose the IP rating based on the environment:
- Dry indoor rooms: IP20 or IP40.
- Humid indoor rooms: IP44 to IP54.
- Outdoor areas: IP65 to IP68 depending on exposure.
- IP67: Protection against dust and temporary immersion (up to 1 m for 30 minutes).
- IP68: Protection against dust and continuous immersion (over 1 m depth).
Yes. High-IP LED lights (e.g., IP65 or IP68) can be used indoors, especially in high-humidity or industrial areas. They provide extra protection against dust and moisture.
Regularly check for damage. Clean with a soft, damp cloth if necessary. Avoid harsh cleaning agents or immersion in water.
IP20 means no protection against dust or moisture. Suitable only for dry indoor rooms.
ISOLED offers many products with IP65 or higher, including LED spotlights, flex strips, and recessed lights. Example: LED AQUA RGB+WW+KW Flexband strips with IP68 for outdoor use. Products can be filtered by protection rating on the ISOLED website.
Ensure all seals are intact, prevent moisture ingress, avoid mechanical stress, and properly mount the lights to maintain the IP rating.
