Answers to Your Questions About Outdoor Lighting

For outdoor lights, the IP protection rating is the key criterion for use under weather conditions. The first digit indicates protection against solid objects and contact, the second against water. For outdoor use, at least IP65 is recommended, which means dust-tight and protected against water jets. IP67 lights can withstand temporary immersion, while IP68 is suitable for permanent underwater applications. The highest protection class, IP69K, offers additional protection against high-pressure cleaning. In addition to water protection, mechanical protection is important and is indicated by the IK rating. IK10 represents very high mechanical protection and is found in industrial and tri-proof lights.

The housings of outdoor lights are typically made of aluminum, serving both as a heat sink and driver housing. Reflectors and covers are usually made of polycarbonate or PMMA. When mounting on corrosion-prone substrates such as Corten steel, direct contact between the aluminum profile and steel must be avoided to prevent galvanic corrosion. Plastic spacers at the screw points and stainless steel screws are required. For maritime environments and coastal areas, special lights with increased salt spray resistance are available, and for underwater applications, fully encapsulated designs provide resistance to chlorine and saltwater. Mounting materials are temperature-resistant from -40 °C to +100 °C; LED chips should not operate above 65 °C.

Upgradeable battery modules are available for emergency lighting requirements, which automatically activate in the event of a power failure. These modules use lithium-ion batteries and typically provide at least three hours of light. Lights with integrated batteries cannot be combined with central battery systems. Not all driver types are suitable for emergency power: especially DALI drivers of certain series may flicker when switching from AC to DC. In fire protection, the D marking is crucial and ensures that the surface temperature does not exceed 90 °C during normal operation. For installations such as acoustic absorbers in office environments, B-s1-d0 is required: flame-retardant, low smoke emission, no burning droplets.

The standard warranty for LED products in the EU is two years, but many manufacturers offer extended warranties of three to five years. Power supplies and tri-proof lights often have a five-year warranty. Lifespan is usually indicated as L70 at B10 or B50: L70 means 70 % of the original light output, B10/B50 indicates the percentage of products below this value. Typical lifespans are 40,000–50,000 hours depending on chip temperature (55 °C → 50,000 h, 75 °C → 35,000 h, 95 °C → 15,000 h). Good cooling, e.g., via aluminum profiles, is essential. High-quality lights offer replaceable drivers, lamp modules, and replacement lenses.

LED outdoor lights are powered via drivers that convert 230 V AC to the operating voltage of the LEDs. 24 V DC is standard for flexible strips and many lights; 48 V variants exist for rail systems. Weatherproof drivers are IP65 or higher and consume <0.5 W in standby. Flexible cables must be fitted with ferrules; tinning is not allowed. Spring terminals offer a secure alternative. Voltage drops over long cable runs can be minimized by using larger cross-sections or feeding from both ends.

Yes, if the maximum ambient temperatures are observed.

Lights are supplied with different connection options: some are pre-wired with spring terminals without their own cable, others with fixed cables of various pole numbers for different control types.

Depending on the product line, lights are delivered at different production stages. Trough lights with emergency power are available upgradeable or pre-wired. Linear lights and light band systems often require on-site configuration (sealing gaskets between rail segments). Plug-in systems have frame parts that can be removed at any time.

Light distribution can be adjusted on some models. Focusable spotlights allow 20–70°; high-bay lights 100–120°. For sports facility lighting, asymmetric light distributions allow precise illumination with minimal light pollution. Reflectors can further narrow the beam angle. Modern driver electronics are sometimes externally housed, improving temperature management and increasing lifespan.

All LED products must comply with the RoHS directive, which limits or bans ten hazardous substances. REACH ensures that no substances of very high concern exceed 0.1 %. Compliance certificates are relevant for data quality in trade portals. Since September 2021, the new European energy efficiency label (A–G) applies, based on light output, power consumption, beam angle, and operating voltage. A QR code on the label links to the European product database. Highly efficient lights achieve >140 lm/W and qualify for funding programs. Passive components such as aluminum profiles are not covered by RoHS.
